KILIMANJARO CHECKLIST

What gear do I need to bring?

You are responsible for bringing your personal gear and equipment, while communal items (such as tents, sleeping mats, camping tables, chairs, food, cooking supplies, etc.) will be provided. Below is a list of required, recommended, and optional items for your Kilimanjaro climb.

SAMPLE CLIMBING GEAR (but not everything necessary)

Technical clothing:

  • 1 Waterproof Jacket, breathable with hood (Recommended)
  • 1 Insulated Jacket, synthetic or down (Recommended)
  • 1 Soft Jacket, fleece or soft-shell (Recommended)
  • 2-3 Long Sleeve Shirt, light-weight, moisture-wicking fabric (Recommended)
  • 1-2 Short Sleeve Shirt, light-weight, moisture-wicking fabric (Recommended)
  • 1 Waterproof Pants, breathable (side-zipper recommended)
  • 2 Hiking Pants (convertible to shorts recommended)
  • 1 Fleece Pants (Recommended)
  • 1 Shorts (optional)
  • 3-4 Long Underwear (moisture-wicking fabric (Recommended)
  • 8-15 Underwear, briefs (moisture-wicking fabric recommended)
  • 2 Sport Bra (women) Head wear (Recommended)
  • 1 Brimmed Hat, for sun protection (Recommended)
  • 1 Knit Hat, for warmth (Recommended)
  • 1 Balaclava, for face coverage (Recommended)
  • 1 Bandana for neck coverage (Recommended)
  • 1 Scarf (Optional)
  • 1 Pair Gloves, warm (waterproof recommended)
  • 1-2 Pair Glove Liners, thin, synthetic, worn under gloves for added warmth (Recommended)
  • 5-8 pieces of Hand and foot warmer (Optional)
  • 1 Pair of Hiking Boots, warm, waterproof, broken-in, with spare laces (Recommended)
  • 1 pair of Running Shoes, Open shoes to wear at camp (optional)
  • 3-4 pair of Socks, thick, wool or synthetic (Recommended)
  • 3 pair of Sock Liners, tight, thin, synthetic, worn under socks to prevent blisters (optional)
  • 1 pair of Gaiters (Recommended)
  • 1 pair of Sunglasses or Goggles (Recommended)
  • 1 Backpack Cover, waterproof (Recommended)
  • 1 Poncho for rainy protection (Recommended)
  • 2 Water Bottles (Nalgene, 32 oz. Recommended)
  • 1 Water Bladder, Camel back type (Recommended)
  • 1 Towel, lightweight, quick-dry (Recommended)
  • 1 Pee Bottle, to avoid leaving tent at night (optional)

Stuff sacks or plastic bags, various sizes, to keep gear dry and separate

Equipment:

  • 1 Sleeping Bag, warm, four seasons (-5 to 18 degree centigrade recommended)
  • 1 Sleeping Bag Liner, for added warmth (optional)
  • 1 Pair of Trekking Poles (recommended)
  • 1 Head lamp, with extra batteries (Recommended)
  • 1 Duffer bag, (waterproof recommended) for porters to carry your equipment (Recommended)
  • 1 Day pack, for daily carrying your personal stuff (Recommended)
  • 1 Sleeping pillow (Optional)

Other toiletries:

  • Sunscreen (Greater than 30 Recommended)
  • Sweat resistant sun cream (p20 is recommended)
  • Lip Balm (Recommended)
  • Insect Repellent, containing DEET (Recommended)
  • Small First Aid Kit (Recommended)
  • Hand Sanitizer (Recommended)
  • Toilet Paper we will provide (Optional to bring yours)
  • Wet Wipes (recommended)
  • Enough Snacks, light-weight, high calorie, high energy (Recommended)
  • Pencil and Notebook, miniature, for trip log (optional)
  • Camera, with extra batteries (Recommended)
  • Purification Tablets (Optional) we will provide treated water for drinking

 

*A sleeping mattress will be provided (it’s optional to bring your own).
*We have a rental store in Tanzania in case you prefer not to purchase all the necessary gear—you can rent equipment there.
*Please do not bring a suitcase. We recommend a rucksack, kit bag, or duffel bag for your Kilimanjaro trek.
